<riteo>want to get a cheap pc: get a monstrous thing
<riteo>want to get a chea pnic: get 10 fcking gbits
<kris_>yeah its kind of insane how much compute for basically nothing
<riteo>that's really cool
<riteo>like, you could find raspis at that price nowadays
<riteo>yeye
<kris_>ya its wild
<kris_>idk as for my desktop build i definitely spent too much
<kris_>worth it but my motherboard alone was like $320
<kris_>anyway as for just buying a cheapo AP to do the job, eventually this asus router is going to stop getting firmware updates and that's mega concerning
<kris_>i bought this in like 2019
<riteo>I see
<kris_>which would put me in the position of maintaining my own openwrt build for it since they don't have support for this one specifically
<riteo>that's the whole point so yea fancy AP it is then
<kris_>either that or just keep cycling cheapo APs to replace the other
<kris_>one stops getting firwmare updates == replace it
<kris_>rinse and repeat
<riteo>lol that's not a bad idea
<riteo>I mean the fancy AP will too one day stop getting firmware updates
<kris_>right now i'm looking at the netgear WAX615PA
<kris_>i hate to say this but it is on sale quite heavily at $90, usually these things are like $180-200
<kris_>ubiquiti equipment is an instant no from me because it's like "no you don't get a webui, download our fancy little app to configure your network"
<riteo>bruh
<kris_>the moment i need to use my phone to configure something i'm out
<riteo>yea
<kris_>at least ubiquiti makes sense for like mass deployments i guess because the whole point is centralized management for hundreds of devices at once
<kris_>which is the real point of the app
<riteo>oh
<riteo>yea that makes sense
