<kris_>i'm building a new router very shortly though so
<kris_>and getting an actual managed switch and some APs
<riteo>vlan is kinda ugly from what I've heard but it's something
<riteo>yay
<kris_>idk about ugly but it's "cleaner" than creating this separation with real hardware
<sewn>you can build your own router???
<kris_>yeah routers are just computers
<sewn>ive just used the one from my isp and it works i think
<kris_>i'm getting an hp t740 for this most likely
<riteo>sewn routers are just computers
<sewn>so nothing special
<sewn>but but
<riteo>yea
<sewn>how does it communicate with tha isp
<kris_>4c8t first gen ryzen, 8gb of ram, probs like a 64gb ssd
<kris_>sewn the router typically isnt really what does that
<kris_>modem/ONT
<riteo>but also, like, there are protocols for that
<sewn>what about fiber optic connections
<riteo>depends on the medium I think
<kris_>fiber you usually have an ONT
<riteo>sewn: there are special transreceivers you stick into the router
<riteo>they do the modem
<riteo>(modulation/demodulation)
<kris_>anyway, shortly i should be good to go, i have some major annoyances with my ISP
<riteo>nice
<kris_>1. can't port forward, 2. can't change DNS servers given via DHCP, 3. the equipment literally just sucks
<riteo>I mean "nice" for the shortly, not for the ISP issues
<kris_>and i have to support a lot of old devices and they wont let me drop from wpa3
<kris_>which is why i'm daisychaining routers, im using one as a wpa2 AP
<kris_>i just happen to *also* use this to segment my LANs
<riteo>for the wpa2 AP you can simply disable nat yk
<sewn>but why would you do all of that stuff does the isp networking not just werk
<kris_>no it doesnt just werk lol
<sewn>a
<kris_>anything but
<riteo>sewn ISP routers are mostly crap
<kris_>so yeah, 10 gig nic in the ryzen thin client and off i go
<kris_>not that i need 10g but why wouldnt i
<kris_>openwrt for now until a friend and i finish our router distro
<riteo>we bought this fucking €200+ thing that came with our offer, slowly paid in pieces (no idea about the word), and it sucks ASS
<sewn>aoh ok that makes esnse
<sewn>the router they give us is free
<kris_>we're paying like $30 per month for our isp box
<kris_>rental fee
<sewn>apparnetly its a gpon ont
<kris_>(and extra to get unlimited data)
<kris_>since that's not really a standard thing in the US
<kris_>1.2tb per month isn't enough for me so unlucky ig
<riteo>wtf you doing with all that data kris
