Yeah it is somewhat strange, but it also gives hands-on experience for repositories and CPT_PATH which is essential information for the distribution in my opinion.

strangely in /dev root is a symlink to sda1 which leads to a ro / at boot and /dev/root as /

You can add a shell function on your profile/shellrc for that
