<raph_ael>you plan to do a binary distro ?
<merakor>I am thinking of distributing some packages as binaries
<merakor>Such as webkit2gtk
<merakor>But the distribution will always stay source based
<raph_ael>ok
<raph_ael>nice
<raph_ael>some softs are a pain to build : rust, firefox, etc
<merakor2>Yeah, they definitely are. I personally use flatpak for firefox.
<merakor2>I mainly use surf, but some of the tools my university uses don't run on surf.
<raph_ael>I use void for the moment, and some appimages for some softs
<raph_ael>I never got into surf, more luakit/vimb/qutebrowser
<merakor2>As far as I remember, appimages don't work without glibc, and snaps don't run without systemd.
<raph_ael>that's the problem
<merakor2>Flatpak is sadly the only option for the containerized software. Chroots also work. I have a void glibc chroot in case I ever need it.
<raph_ael>I read some people using appimage with some hacks like chroot
<raph_ael>I'm using glibc void for the moment
<merakor2>I used to run glibc void previously.
<merakor2>I was hopping a lot before though.
<merakor2>In my opinion Void is the best binary distribution.
<raph_ael>I agree
<raph_ael>I come from debian, and before that gentoo and netbsd
<raph_ael>ah wget https://dl.carbslinux.org/distfiles/cpt-chroot is 404 as it's still kiss-chroot
<merakor2>Oops, sorry for that.
<merakor2>Fixed that, thank you
<raph_ael>:)
...
<merakor>How is your installation going? :)
...
* Digithas thrown voidlinux with sowm on a friend's laptop... he (in his ignorance) wanted ubuntu.
<Digit>now i'm thinking of going even further and instead giving him carbs (with sowm). :3
...
<raph_ael>merakor: I strangely can't get a kernel to boot, same config as for kiss
<merakor>Digit: I would probably cry if I was using a source based distro when I was a newb
<merakor>raph_ael: what's the exact issue?
<Digit>other mad ideas include: including a keybind & commands cheatsheet on the background image (or in a conky or something lighter than conky), and a scipt to hijack with bedrock and add an unbuntu stratum for 'em. :3 lol. throwing them in the deep end twice.
<merakor>I honestly think gentoo is the most unintuitive and hard to learn distribution in the world, you could install that for him :D
<Digit>tried exherbo? :D
<merakor2>I have heard it before but never checked it out :D
<merakor2>Wow, an extra ruby dependency on their package manager
<merakor2>So if it is a fork of portage, that makes bash, python, and ruby dependencies.
<merakor2>Also cmake for the build
<merakor2>Lovely
<Digit>it's full of quirks (some very admirable). n_n paludis, idk if ever forked from portage, shares /some/ similarities, but it's worse than going from spanish to portuguese trying to understand. n_n
<merakor2>Doesn't seem to be forked from portage. But it certainly is a lot more complex than it.
<merakor2>I would have never thought to see some package manager more complex than portage itself.
<merakor2>I have run cloc on it, wanna hear the stats?
<merakor2>192303 lines of code
<merakor2>Top languages: C++, sh, bash, CMake, Ruby, Python
<merakor2>2155 files
<Digit>ho ho ho ho. hefty.
<merakor2>Seriously, portage is suckless compared to this monstrosity :D
* Digitgits cpt and clocs it for compariton. n_n heh, figures around double i imagined it might be.
<merakor2>It is more than what I imagined as well :D
